How Does Advanced Wormer Plus Work
As an anthelmintic (works to displace or destroy parasitic worms in the gastrointestinal tract), Advanced Wormer Plus eliminates the worms by inducing spasms to the worm leading to paralysis. The worm is then wiped out within the intestine of the host fish or is passed through the body via their stool.
Advanced Wormer Plus can be used to control a variety of fish parasites. Cestode (tapeworm) infestations as well as ectoparasites such as monogean trematodes, or flukes.
Praziquantel, the active ingredient in Advanced Wormer Plus has been used in a wide range of fish species to control a variety of fish parasites since the early 1990’s. Specifically studies with carp for cestode (tapeworm) infestations as well as ectoparasites such as monogean trematodes, or flukes.
This medication can also be used at much colder temperatures – it has been successfully trialed at temperatures as low as 3°C. One treatment is sufficient for adult flukes and larvae, or a double dose treatment to eradicate fluke eggs.
Advanced Wormer Plus can also be utilised to treat new arrivals during quarantine period and once per year to ensure your fish remain worm and fluke free.
Typically, one treatment is all that is needed to cure the infection with the medication being absorbed directly from the treated water into the fish.
Precautions
- Remove carbon from the tank before and during treatment
- Be careful when treating scale-less fish such as loaches or invetebrates we would suggest starting at 1/4 dose and monitoring closely, increase the dosage carefully if required.
- UV steralisers, protein skimmers & ozone generators should be switched off before and during treatment
- Keep out of the reach of children
- For animal treatment only
- Mix the medication in existng tank/pond water only then add the solution
- Read the instructions carefully
Side Effects
There is no known side effects of Praziquantel. However there have been studies showing it can become toxic in high volumes, which are somewhere around 40x to 50x greater than recommended dosing. Always use the stated dose, no additional benefits can be gained by overdosing.
Extensive trials have also demonstrated that Praziquantel has no toxic effects (using the stated dose)* on the natural wildlife of the pond, will not harm filter bacteria, plants and is safe for use when fry are present in the aquarium.

Parasites such as flukes are more often a problem with wild caught fish. Many parasites only become a visible issue when introduced to an aquarium. For this reason careful quarantine methods are recommended. Quarantining new arrivals will ensure to avoid infecting the rest of your tank. It will also likely reduce the amount of Advanced Wormer Pro you will need to use.
